Machined Part

When working for a customer, they told me they had a problem with a certain part of their machine. It acted as a stop for the incoming parts, but as the parts would hit it, it also acted as a sensor. Therefore, the stop had to be elecrically insulated from the rest of the machine. So, the original manifacturer of this machine designed it out of plastic, with a small metal plate where the parts would touch. This plate was connected through a wire to the control box. The problem with this design, was that the plastic couldn’t withstand the continous force of the parts slamming into it. Making the complete stop out of steel wasn’t an option, since it would then no longer be insulated.

So I set to work to work and copied the shape of the stop, however designing it so that the back part would be covered by a sleeve for insulation and leaving the front part open, so a wire could be connected to it. The sleeve was 3D printed out of nylon.

Installed it, and it’s still going strong after hundreds of thousands of products.
